Project Overview

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) operates NYRA Bets, one of the leading online wagering platforms in the country. NYRA Bets provides handicapping data, including real-time race entry and odds information, to sports fans through web-based applications. This enables equine enthusiasts to place wagers on local, national, and international horse racing events, including races at NYRA’s owned and operated racetracks in New York.

The NYRA Bets team called on Culture Foundry, NYRA’s official web design and development partner, when they realized the platform’s outdated user interface was impeding their ability to attract, engage, and retain new customers.

Challenge

The legacy NYRA Bets website was built around iFrames that housed wagering data supplied by a separate vendor. The front-end display limited the amount and placement of promotional content the NYRA Bets marketing team was able to use to attract new players to the platform and incentivize them to use it regularly.

The NYRA Bets website was largely managed by the separate vendor, making timely updates to marketing- and customer service-related content a challenge for the team, which had to schedule content refreshes in tandem with other application updates handled by software developers in a different time zone.

Additionally, the site was not optimized for smaller screens, such as smartphones and tablets, which sports fans rely on to conduct research and place bets.

Solution

We scheduled listening sessions with the NYRA Bets team to understand the level of autonomy they desired over the user experience (UX), while considering the optimal way to give site managers more control over customer-focused sections of the website.

The team told us they needed a flexible content management system (CMS) with simple editing tools they could use to create and update content in a way that didn’t disrupt or distract from the wagering interface – or cause confusion for horse players accustomed to existing betting tools and workflows.

Our solution was a headless – or decoupled – CMS that marries a user-friendly marketing website to a secure wagering application via API, with each pulling in essential data as needed.

Outcome

NYRA Bets now enjoys a sharply designed homepage fully focused on customer acquisition and engagement, featuring a sleek new color palette, eye-catching graphics, and candid images of racing stars and winning players in action. Site visitors can easily jump to landing pages featuring handicapping, promotions, and contest info, and find ways to watch horse racing live and on-demand.

All of this content is served iFrame-free, can be easily edited in the CMS, and is optimized for mobile screens. The original wagering interface and all of the valuable, real-time data it commingles for bettors, pulls into NYRA Bets as before, and the website’s relaunch created no new learning curve for handicappers already familiar with the “Bet Now” section of the site, which is still prominently positioned in the main navigation.

NYRA Bets’ remade website offers the best of both worlds: a fan-focused front-end with intuitive editing tools that gives site managers total control, connected to a secure wagering platform with a familiar wagering pad for race fans eager to play and win.
