An Ecommerce Revamp for Bell Wine Cellars

removing barriers, powering DTC sales

Project Overview

Bell Wine Cellars, based in Yountville, California, is one the Napa Valley’s most prolific producers of single-clone Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery also produces Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay varieties, which Bell’s dedicated team of vintners offers to wine enthusiasts through membership programs, tasting experiences, and a branded online store available through Bell’s official website.

Given the integral part Bell’s website plays in its sales, marketing, and wine club recruitment and retention efforts, the winery’s management team contacted Culture Foundry when it became apparent they needed a user-friendly editing interface that could accommodate a new ecommerce platform, while also helping Bell comply with current website accessibility guidelines.

Challenge

At the time Bell’s management team approached Culture Foundry, the winery’s official website was relying on three tools that actually hampered site performance:

  1. A counterintuitive page-building tool that created headaches for site editors
  2. An ecommerce platform that restricted sales opportunities through the site
  3. A website widget intended to aid with online accessibility issues that was instead creating a liability for Bell in terms of ADA/WCAG compliance

Solution

Our crew immediately addressed concerns with accessibility compliance by first removing the problematic widget and then correcting issues in the website’s code to improve accessibility directly.

From there, we helped the Bell team replace its existing ecommerce solution with eCellar, a more dynamic option that gave the sales and marketing team greater flexibility in how it can structure its online store, promote its offerings to wine club members, and sell direct to consumers.

In tandem with the eCellar integration, our design team refreshed the website’s homepage and other design elements throughout the site that were impacted by the ecommerce upgrade and extended those thematic updates into a redesigned template for Bell’s email communications to customers.

Outcome

Our team continues to provide regular design and development support for the Bell Wine Cellars website, and a companion microsite for its affordable red blend, The Scoundrel, while hosting and providing an ongoing support program for both sites.

We also monitor the Bell sites for ADA/WCAG accessibility and make recommendations and adjustments as necessary to help both websites remain compliant with current federal guidelines.
